Everyone in the coven sat down for dinner that evening. Callie led Selene into the dining room. A long table with candles as centerpieces took up the most space. At one end lay the entrance to the kitchen. On the other, glass doors leading outside.

“It’s nice you dine together,” Selene said.

“That’s what families do.” Callie flicked her wrist, and from another room, a chair floated over to the dining table. It marched to the end and then went still once it found a spot.

The other witches greeted them as they claimed their seats. Callie sat toward the front, but nobody occupied the lone chair that was head of the table. A line of large dishes filed into the room in floaty, midair fashion, setting themselves up around the candle centerpieces. Zira entered with her arms in the air, controlling the plates like a puppeteer with invisible strings.

“Zira loves to cook,” Blondie whispered out the side of her mouth. “Not that I mind. She’s really good.”

Selene smiled. In her pocket, her phone buzzed again. She withdrew it and checked it under the table. Another text message from Aiden. This one read:

The situation was a controlled environment. I had my noise-canceling headphones.

She quickly texted a reply: You say that like you haven’t jumped off a boat before. And again today! You were SOAKED!

Dishes and silverware chinked and clanged as everyone around the table began filling their plates. Selene piled some roast chicken and mashed potatoes onto hers and reached for a dinner roll. Solana, who was sitting across from Selene, raised her brows.

“Isn’t there an easier way to do that?”

Selene’s cheeks warmed up. “Oh, right.”

She held out her hand and a dinner roll soared from the basket and into her fingers. Her phone buzzed yet again.

I don’t think you can be mad at me when you’re attending the you-know-what-with-you-know-who.

A streak of stubbornness ribboned through her. Her chest tightened and she stuffed her phone into her jean pocket. He couldn’t possibly turn this around on her. He had gone seeking out the creature after promising he’d stay away! With Delilah of all people!

Blondie proved right on Zira’s cooking. For the next hour, the table full of witches dined and chatted. Selene told Blondie about her best friend, Noelle, being a green witch. Zira and Solana shared their backgrounds.

“Tennessee.” Zira’s voice twanged as she answered. Today she had styled her voluminous afro in two large puffs. “I ran away when I was sixteen. There weren’t any witches in my hometown. I was adopted, so my family wasn’t like me. I couldn’t take being the only one.”

“Did you say good-bye to your adopted family?”

“I wrote them letters. I had heard about places just for us. That’s when I went looking. It’s really lucky I ran into Callie. I had nothing but twenty bucks left. You go through cash fast when running away.”

“Wow, I can’t imagine.” Selene thought back to her teen years. She’d had a similar experience in Brimrock. She never fit in and always stuck out like a sore thumb.
